Nepal History
If you’re considering a trip to Nepal, you’ll receive even more motivation to visit once you learn just how rich Nepal history is. This country is simply amazing in that its history spans thousands of years to encompass over 40 different races and tribes.
You may be surprised to find out, but Nepal history sources track this country all the way back to prehistoric times! The Kathmandu Valley is the site where Neolithic tools have been found, providing strong evidence that people have populated the Himalayan region for at least 9,000 years. The specific race of people that lived here were most likely the Kirant people. They ruled Nepal for approximately 2,500 years.
Moving on to ancient Nepal history, specific scriptures, archaeological evidence and documentation all indicate references to Nepalese cultures in the era of 800 to 600 BC. Furthermore, historic evidence takes us to approximately 1,000 BC. At this point in time, we can see that minor kingdoms and groups of clans starting rising in the Terai Region. It is during this magical time that one of the most well-known names in history arose—Buddha (563–483 BC). Born into the Shakya clan or confederation, this man’s birth name was Siddharta Gautama. He rose as a prince but gave up his title in order to pursue an austere life of enlightenment.
Progressing through the medieval period of time, we can see that clans and confederations clashed on and off to divide the various regions of the country. But it wasn’t until later in the 1700’s that the modern nation of Nepal came to be through Prithvi Narayan and his troops.
