Everest Gokyo Trek

We start our trek from Lukla. This is an adventurous trek, visiting all of the high valleys of the Khumbu with extra time at Gokyo to explore the upper valley. Our camp at Gorakshep provides the opportunity to ascend to kalapathar 5,545m for more spectacular views of the surrounding mountains, including the black rocky ramparts of Everest's southwest face. Trekking around Gokyo valley is considered a traditional trek that offers magnificent views of the mountain peaks and the Ngozumpa Glacier- the largest in Nepal's Himalayas. The image of this region is associated with the soaring views of the most popular mountains in Nepal, at an altitude of 8000m such as Cho Oyu, Everest, Lhotse and Makalu which are clearly visible from Gokyo Ri above Gokyo Lake. Our return journey takes us to Tengboche monastery, the most important center of Buddhism in the area, before descending to Lukla and fly back to Katmandu the next day

Day 4: Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3440m)

Today begins on level ground, relative to the environment in which you are!  You will cross the river on a high suspension bridge and begin to climb up to Monjo (2800m) and on to the gateway to the Sagamartha National Park Entrance in place to protect and preserve this beautiful environment.  There is a good rest stop on the way up where you will see people gathered, admiring the first real chance to see Everest in the distance. Namche is a growing town tucked into a neat little valley, there is lots going on in the centre with market days on Friday and Saturday. There are some interesting museums and shops.  There is also internet and a sauna!  You could venture further afield, take a visit to Khumjung where the Hillary school sits and Khunde nearby, on the way back to Namche you could visit the Shyangboche airstrip, (3790m) the highest in the world nearby is the Everest View Hotel for stunning views.

Day 7: Dole to Machhermo (4150m):

It takes about five hours. From Dole you climb steadily along the side of the valley, where the small and thorny bushes give way to scrub juniper as the altitude increases. The trail passes many summer settlements, which are used when yaks are taken to these pastures to graze in the summer months. Ahead of you are excellent views of Cho Oyu, while back down the valley are the peaks of Kantega and Thamserku

Day 8: Dole to Gokyo (4750m)

Today you climb steadily along the valley of the Dudh Kosi River coming out above the tree line now the vegetation adapting to the altitude itself is more scrub and low juniper bushes.  You will pass through several summer pastures used by yak herders.  As you make your way up to Gokyo your views of Cho Oyo ahead improve but the immediate local scenery is very pretty across the valley, looking up you will see evidence of Glacial lakes and very colourful valley sides.  Behind you are views of Kantega and Thamserku.  Passing the dramatic Machermo (4410m) Valley and on to the small settlement of Panka.  Eventually you find yourself walking close to the banks of the river and climbing to the top of a small ridge which then leads you into the first lake. You soon arrive at the larger, second lake and not far is the third on the banks of which is Gokyo.  The scenery here is magnificent with the mountain scenery reflected in the emerald green water.

Day 9: Rest Day

A good day trip today is to head out to the 4th (2 hours, one way) and 5th lakes, both following the valley floor or climbing to the ridge above the glacier on the right hand side make great routes.

Day 10:  Gokyo to Machermo (4150m)

Climbing to the top of Gokyo Ri (4150m) is a must.  It will take you a few hours and you will find your breathing is laboured but the views from the top make it all worth while, it is spectacular with Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyo in clear view amongst many other snow capped peaks, it is breathtaking particularly if you make it for sunrise.
